By Don Post, DIRT Sportsman Series Reporter Syracuse, N.Y. - October 7, 2005 - The drizzle that slowly fell over the “Moody Mile” and shorted the second of the two scheduled NativePoker.com heat races for the DIRT 358-Modifieds put an end to all Super DIRT Week activities on Friday at the famous New York State Fairgrounds facility. In an attempt to get the Advance Auto Parts big-block Modified Dynomax Triple 20s and the two 358 heats in the books, DIRT Officials moved the starting time up one hour to beat the rain and they did just that. As the yellow and checkered flags flew over the second and final rain-shortened NativePoker.com event, the drizzle turned into a steady rain to put the Sportsman Super DIRT Series hot laps and Time Trials on hold. Following over an hour of waiting out the weather, officials were forced to postpone Sportsman action to Saturday morning. Thirty-one teams signed in for practice and Time Trials for Saturday’s 30-mile test at Syracuse. Nine of the top-12 in overall points were in the pits ready to set up for their Time Trial session. It was not to be as a solid weather pattern of rain was visible all across the local radar. Officials also in contact with nearby Rolling Wheels Raceway waited another hour to finally decide to axe the 358-Modified/Sportsman SDS doubleheader on the fast 5/8-miler in Elbridge. The show will not be made up leaving only this weekend's Syracuse event along with the Oct. 15th combined event at Cayuga Co. Fair Speedway and the Sportsman portion of the Atlantic Coast Championships at South Jersey’s Bridgeport Speedway in two weeks scheduled. New Jersey pilots John Stangle, Mario Page, John McClelland and Jeff Geiges made the long tow north only to have to wait till Saturday to get a crack at the Syracuse Mile. Sportsman Super DIRT Series regulars Russ Hefti of Jordan, Ransomville's Kevin Wills, and Lake Ariel, Pa. star Kevin Bates were ready to trip the clocks as the rain set in. Brockport’s Brian Sage, rebounding from some tough luck of late on the Tour, was on hand along with fellow Western N.Y. racer Kyle Inman. North country regulars Rob Bellinger of Dexter and Theresa’s Lance Willix ll, along with Greg Doust in his final season, were all disappointed in the delay as well. Eastern Sportsman drivers Joe Williams and Richard Quick along with Jessica Zemken and Mike Ballestero, who were not part of the Sportsman Series in 2005, signed in for the 30-mile run. These teams will be on hand once again Saturday to make a qualifying attempt on the mile in the morning leading up to the afternoon’s racing card.
