In the only Advance Auto Parts SDS event under the clocks, Brett Hearn set the one-lap standard with a time of 14.924 seconds (80.407 mph) recorded on June 12, 2001. Alan Johnson is the defending Brewerton season champion while Billy Decker tops the current big-block points chart. Bob McCreadie is the all-time track Modified feature winner with 84 victories tallied in both big-block and small-block competition. Cayuga County is a high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval. Billy Decker established the single lap record in an Advance Auto Parts SDS event when he circled the track in 15.668 seconds (86.163 mph) on Sept. 1, 2002. Recently crowned 'Empire DIRT Series' Alan Johnson is the current points leader while runner-up Tim Fuller is the defending Cayuga County season champion. Will Cagle is the all-time CCFS big-block Modified feature winner with 84 victories. Rolling Wheels is a spacious 5/8-mile clay oval. Tim Fuller established the single lap record in an Advance Auto Parts SDS event when he circled the track in 20.146 seconds (111.685 mph) on July 5, 2004; Jimmy Phelps set fast time of 20.547 seconds (109.505 mph) for the Petrocci Memorial on Sept. 5, 2005. Gary Tomkins is the two-time defending Rolling Wheels season champion while Billy Decker tops the current RWR big-block points chart. DIRT Hall of Famer Will Cagle is the all-time RWR big-block Modified feature winner with 70 victories. Rolling Wheels has staged just two big-block races in 2004, with Decker and Fuller each earning trips to victory lane. PREVIOUS WINNERS With last year's event cancelled due to rain, Super DIRT Series action returns to Brewerton after a short time away from the Northeast's premier big-block Modified traveling tour. Canadian Joe Plazek captured the first of six Advance Auto Parts SDS checkered flags in 1994 and the bespectacled 'Barefoot' Bob McCreadie ---Brewerton's all-time Modified winner--- scored back-to-back victories in 1995 and '96. Long-time rivals Danny Johnson ('97) and Brett Hearn ('98) posted wins before second-generation standout Tim McCreadie (2001) made his way to the winner's circle following a two-year layoff. 2001 is the only year that time trials were conducted with Hearn topping 38 open-wheel entries to claim the $100 Integra Shocks Fast Time Award. Bob McCreadie tops that legendary list of 11 drivers that have captured extra-distance victories at The Port. Although 2006 marks the 33rd edition since beginning in September 1972, the first 'Northeast Championship' counting towards the overall Mr. DIRT title was 150 laps and claimed by eventual three-time race winner Jack Johnson in 1980. Merv Treichler won his lone 150-lapper in '81 and was followed by Alan Johnson. The event was run mid-September in 1983 and lengthened to 200-laps as part of the former CAM2 Trail, with Jack Johnson returning to victory lane. Bob McCreadie captured three of the next four 200-lappers while Danny Johnson took the top prize in 1986 and Kenny Brightbill copped the final double century grind in '89. While Steve Paine opened the next decade with his only September win in '91, McCreadie (4 wins) and Danny Johnson (3) controlled the rest of the 1990s; when the event was cancelled to reschedule the rain-delayed Petrocci Memorial at Rolling Wheels in 1993, McCreadie won that 100-lapper as well. Billy Decker won the first of a pair (also '03) to usher in the new millennium while Tim McCreadie (2001), Alan Johnson ('02), Tim Fuller ('04) and defending race winner Pat Ward ('05) helped orchestrate the changing of the guard. They are joined by first-year track promoter T.J. Fitzgibbons as DIRT NorthEast's newest managerial team. Former owners Harvey, Joan and David Fink joined up with DIRT MotorSports in 1994 and the big-block Modifieds have been the headline class at Brewerton Speedway ever since. However, long before the Fink family arrived on the scene, a dozen different promoters and owners with twice as many ideas turned the Central New York track into an oval of uncertainty while offering both open-wheel and full-fender stock car racing to its Friday night faithful. With an initial investment of $53,000, the speedway was built in 1948 by Alvin Richardson of Buffalo and the track measured a full quarter-mile. After the first race was halted because of poor track conditions, the speedway was paved and the popular midget class headlined the card. July 4th, 1949 was the first race at the "new" Brewerton Speedway and 4,000 people showed up to witness a midget race promoted by Don Strong and Don Georgia which was won by Steve Yanigan. With more tracks starting up and crowds down due to declining midget fields, Brewerton management brought in stock cars and Charlie Stark won the first race on May 17, 1950. Promoter Al Richardson ran Wednesdays and Saturdays under the Empire State Stock Car Association with $2,000 purses while midgets ran on Sundays under Interstate Auto Racing Club sanction. DIRT Hall of Famer Roscoe "Pappy" Hough won the first ever NASCAR Short Track race at Brewerton on Sept. 1, 1951. The speedway closed due to owner Al Richardson's heart attack on July 17, 1956 and re-opened the following May with a Friday night race program under the promotion of Ralph Mazzoli; Richardson still owned the speedway but could not operate due to his health. Donald (Pete) Gillette, Dick Brown and Bill Luke promoted under Richardson beginning in 1958 and the track was renamed Route 11 Speedway in 1960. Jim Carroll surfaced as the new promoter for the '61 race season and after a few races the track was closed and the corners were rebanked with a lowered infield; nearby Mil-Ray Raceway ---today known as Fulton Speedway and also formerly owned by Harvey Fink--- opened the same year. John Colbert promoted the races at Route 11 under the sanction of the Empire State Racing Club in 1962 before Bob Rogers and his Tri-County Racing Association promoted the races at Brewerton Speedway in '63, the same year Dave Kotary, only 20 years old, was the track champion winning 17 out of the 20 races run to make him the all-time Brewerton feature winner at that time. In 1965, after seventeen seasons, Al Richardson sold the track to Archie Greene who owned the junkyard next door while Rogers stayed on as promoter. Modified races were run in '67 on Sundays with the late Jim Shampine winning the last race of the year in August. In 1969 Rogers became president of the Maple Grove Raceway Association that sanctioned races at Brewerton as well as Waterloo and Weedsport speedways yet his group fell out of control soonafter and Greene regained track promotions associated with the Watertown (NY) circuit. Clifford J. Carey promoted Brewerton in 1971 and the following season David Snyder took over the reigns and converted the 1/4-mile paved track into a 1/3-mile D-shaped dirt track. Snyder ran Modifieds on Thursday and Saturday nights, with Barry Harrington as the track manager. The first Modified race on dirt was run on Thursday July 20, 1972 with Will Cagle the winner and just two days later George Ely won a Modified race with just a seven-car field, which ended racing for the year. The weekly show changed over to Saturday nights late in 1973 with the season ending on Sundays in September. Top winners and runners were Gerald Chamberlain, Jack Johnson, Jerry Cook, Lou Lazzaro, Jim Shampine, Chuck Ciprich, Dave Kneisel, Jim Winks, George Ely, and Frank Mears. On August 25 of '73, a 100-lap Syracuse Schaefer qualifyier was won by track champion Cagle. In 1974 Tom and Joe Grosso promoted the races with a very limited schedule and the ensuing season Roger Burdick, Paul Bowker and Lynn Holmes took over the promotion with sanction by the Northway Raceway with Limited 318 Sportsman and Strictly Stocks filling the program. On October 5, 1975, a 100-mile Limited 318 Sportsman race attracted 73 entries and was won by Frank Cozze, who pocketed $1,000. Lease problems forced out the old management and Roger Allen, Dave Fox and Hal Dixon promoted 318 Sportsman races at Brewerton during the Bicentennial season despite 10 of the 22 races falling to rain. Steve Armstrong was the last promoter during the decade as no races were held from 1978-79. The entire speedway grounds were renovated in 1980 by new owner Fred Mathieson, who bought the speedway from Archie Green. Bob McCreadie was crowned the Small-Block Modified track champion. Brewerton was sanctioned by DIRT MotorSports for the first time in 1984 and Donnie Wetmore earned the points championship. Independent owners Charlie and Bob Trump purchased the speedway from Fred Mathieson in '86 and completed many improvements. In 1988 new promotional partner Jim Ferlito joined Charlie Trump and continued to make more renovations. With Fink at the helm, DIRT Motorsports was brought in once again to sanction the racing in 1994 and the result was the beginning of an impressive period of prosperity for Brewerton Speedway. Popular Bob McCreadie won eleven features on the way to the '94 Track Championship in front of large weekly crowds. Other winners in 1994 were Canadian Joe Plazek, who won the first-ever big block Modified (old format) and 358-Modified SDS showdowns, and Frank Cozze, winner of the first Super DIRT Series small-block special during Super DIRT Week, which has become a staple ever since. For many years known as Weedsport Speedway, the Cayuga County Fair Speedway and surrounding fairgrounds have grown in both size and stature since the early era of stock car racing. Under the guidance of Drivers Independent Race Tracks founder Glenn Donnelly, the modernized facility gained national recognition as the headquarters of DIRT MotorSports NorthEast and site of the Hall of Fame and Classic Car Museum. One of three founding-member speedways in 1976 when DIRT MotorSportsT was formed, 2006 marks Cayuga County's 52nd consecutive season of stock car racing with the first event staged in July of 1955 and won by Ron Narducci. When Stanley Dudzinski first began carving out a third-mile oval in his berry patch using railroad ties to mark the frontstretch wall, he never dreamed that five decades later the same field would become synonymous with the leading short-track sanctioning body of dirt racing in the country and offer nationally televised Modified events. This season 19 race dates include open-wheel Modified, winged Sprint Car, full-fender Street Stock and non-stop Enduro racing. As the month of July came to a close, Jack Deery was named as General Manager of the historic Central New York speedplant. Another of the founding-member speedways in the original DIRT MotorSports NorthEast regime, Rolling Wheels boasts a unique specials-only race format instituted throughout the season that has continued to produce a hotbed of trackside activity for both fans and drivers alike. The "Fast Track" was first mapped out by the late Bob Petrocci, yet just one year following the August 17, 1969 opener Petrocci lost his life in a freak accident while spectating at a nearby speedway. Sons Robert,Jr. and Donald Petrocci inherited promotional duties and eventually signed up the second weekly track to join DIRT founder Glenn Donnelly and his fledgling motorsports operation. Rolling Wheels ran regularly every Friday night with big-block Modifieds and Late Models until ultimately trimming the summer schedule in 1982. This season eight race dates include open-wheel Advance Auto Parts big-block Modified and winged World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series events with full-fender divisions joining the unique mix. Along with Cayuga County Fair Speedway, Jack Deery also holds the title of General Manager at RWR. With many drivers accustomed to competing at multiple tracks on a regular basis, only the best finishes at one track are counted. The 31st Mr. DIRT Championship run will be contested at 19 tracks throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Ohio, along with the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Twenty-seven scheduled tour events will carry valuable points counting directly towards the coveted title, with the champion crowned after eight months of ground-pounding short-track activity. 2006 Tour 12: For the second straight year DIRT MotorSportsT has signed up the best big-block Modified teams in the Northeast to compete in every Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series show. The current list of a dozen contracted drivers (in alphabetical order) includes popular Pennsylvanian Frank Cozze, four-time and defending Eckerd 200 titlist Billy Decker, reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller, all-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn, DIRT's winningest big-block Modified driver Alan Johnson, five-time DIRT MotorSports NE Driver of the Year Danny Johnson, Canandaigua (NY) Speedway record-setter Steve Paine, second-year tour mainstay Jimmy Phelps, first-year full-time Series follower Dale Planck, rising star Matt Sheppard, former Mr. DIRT champion Gary Tomkins and 30-year open-wheel veteran Pat Ward. 'Contracted 12' Among Pre-Race Favorites: The numbers are there and so is the strong possibility that one of the 12 contracted drivers following the Advance Auto Parts SDS will find his way into victory lane at Brewerton, Cayuga County and Rolling Wheels following the Central New York tripleheader. Those same dozen big-block chauffeurs account for 39 point titles at these three popular CNY ovals with Billy Decker leading this year at both Brewerton and Rolling Wheels while Alan Johnson tops the Cayuga County chart. Adding in 23 more feature wins at these tracks in '06, the same star-studded group has totaled a whopping 435 career DIRT big-block victories; 200 at Cayuga County, 126 at Brewerton and 109 at Rolling Wheels. Four-time overall Mr. DIRT Champion Alan Johnson has 131 triumphs; 56 at CCFS, 41 at Brewerton and 34 at RWR. Super DIRT Series On SPEED TV: Carried "live" by Time Warner Cable on Sunday, the 33rd Northeast 100 Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series showdown will also be tape-delayed as part of 'Rush Hour On DIRT' and air Nov. 12, 2006 on SPEED TV at 6 p.m., EST. Internationally recognized motorsports broadcaster Rick Benjamin and Super DIRT Series talent Shane Andrews are slated to man the announcing booth throughout the show while Mark Kenyon will report pitside with behind-the-scenes interviews. The "live" version Sept. 3 on TWC includes a 1-1/2-hour program broadcast beginning at 8:00pm (EST) and concluding with flag-to-flag coverage of the 100-lap big-block Modified main. The feed is expected to reach more than 1.2 million homes throughout New York State and come November the production on SPEED will hit 75 million households nationwide. Fast Timers Earn Integra Shocks Award: In a joint agreement made between Integra Shocks and DIRT MotorSports NorthEast, Integra Shocks will play an active role in point fund sponsorship of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series during the 2006 race season. The fast driver during Advance Auto Parts SDS qualifying will earn the 'Integra Shocks Fast Time Award' and the driver winning the most Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the season will collect a bonus set of four Integra Shocks ($1,000 value) at the DIRT MotorSports NorthEast Banquet in November. The Advance Auto Parts Series has recognized fast time trialers since 1983, with 1999 marking the first year the awards program included every tour event scheduled during the year. All-time Advance Auto Parts SDS race winner Brett Hearn is also a leader when it comes to speed, earning a series-best total of 34 Integra Shocks Fast Time awards during the past 20 years. Drivers will continue to draw for time trial order and the 'Integra Shocks Fast Time Award' winner will collect $100 and 5 bonus points as well as pole-position in the first qualifying heat. A heads-up format based on time trial results will be used to determine the starting order for each qualifying race, with the top three finishers earning additional bonus points as follows: 1st-5 pts, 2nd-3 pts, 3rd-1 pt. A driver may earn only a maximum of 5 points in preliminary events even if the fast timer is also a heat race winner. 'No Limit' Tailgating At CCFS: Tailgating is a modern-day ritual enjoyed by thousands of fans nationwide. True tailgating, however, is an art form that requires ---and exposes--- very special talents. Do you have what it takes? Cayuga County Fair Speedway will be recognizing the hard core tailgaters who know no limits when it comes to pre-race partying. Prizes for Best Looking Site, Best Food - Taste, Best Food - Selection, Best Dressed, Most Race-Oriented Theme and an Overall Speedway Tailgating Champion will be awarded to honor the most extraordinary exhibits on Sunday afternoon. Judges will be roaming the Cayuga County fairgrounds from 1-5 p.m. on Sept. 3. Five-Year Flashback: It's been five years since Brewerton Speedway last staged an Advance Auto Parts Modified SDS event with second generation standout Tim McCreadie dominating the 100-lapper to score his first win of the year at the D-Shaped Dirt Demon. It was McCreadie's current Sweeteners Plus teammate Vic Coffey swapping the lead early with fast time trialer Brett Hearn before Timmy Mac forged the final lead change on lap 30 en route the $6,000 triumph. Billy Decker was the only driver to challenge McCreadie in the late going before he pulled the no. 56 Finch's Trucking entry into victory lane for one of his 11 career big-block wins at Brewerton. Steve Paine made a late race charge to steal second from Decker while Hearn settled for fourth-place ahead of Pennsylvanian Doug Hoffman, who started 28th in the 31-car field. Rounding out the top-10 were current contracted drivers Tim Fuller and Gary Tomkins, Eastern New York runners A.J. Romano and Bobby Varin, and Steve Hulsizer, who utilized a 358-cubic inch motor in the Tuesday night special. 2006 RACE REVIEWS May 7 @ RWR: The 2006 Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series ran off its second event in May at Rolling Wheels. Defending Syracuse Eckerd 200 winner Billy Decker and reigning overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT champion Tim Fuller shared victory lane laurels as they each captured a leg of the 26th Annual DIRT Challenge Cup held Sunday afternoon. The twin 50-lap feature races awarded the winners $3,000 each and valuable points in the Advance Auto Parts SDS and Decker was the best on the day, securing runner-up honors in the second main event. Decker timed fourth fastest and won the fourth of five qualifying heats before drawing the pole-position to start the initial DIRT big-block AAP Modified main. In a race that was slowed for just two brief caution periods, Decker opened up a comfortable lead on each restart in the LJL Motorsports no. 91 Gypsum Wholesalers-Stadium International-Quality Hardwoods/Bicknell entry before scoring an eight car-length victory over runner-up Gary Tomkins, who began the today besting a strong field of 47 cars registered for the Integra Shocks Time Trials, touring the smooth 5/8-mile Elbridge oval in a time of 20.643 sec. (108.996 mph). Alan Johnson, Fuller and World of Outlaws Late Model Series star Tim McCreadie completed the top-five. Decker rolled a pair of dice ---three and six turned up--- to invert the top-nine finishers for the start of the 50-lap finale. Vic Coffey secured the pole and pulled out to an early advantage while Fuller began sixth and after just five laps had already put his JL Motorsports no. 19 Native Poker-Chiefs Tobacco & Gas-G&R Auto Parts/TEO mount in the top-three. Fuller slid past Pat Ward on the seventh circuit and chased down Coffey before bolting past high on the back straightaway for the final lead exchange on lap 11. Despite runner-up Decker getting a glimpse of the leader late in the race, it was all for naught as Fuller outlasted his nearest chaser by four car-lengths at the wire. Tomkins, Tim McCreadie and Coffey filled out the front-five slots. May 28 @ CCFS: Danny Johnson became the first three-time winner of the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series Bill McNabb Hall of Fame Classic 100 on Sunday night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, holding off a late race rally by Gary Tomkins to garner the first tour triumph for his former JIR Motorsports team. Johnson's initial Advance Auto Parts SDS victory of the season was the seventh of his career at the Weedsport oval and netted him the $6,000 top prize and valuable points towards the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT Championship. Outside pole-sitter Vic Coffey out-dragged front row partner Frank Cozze to open the century grind with Integra Shocks Fast Timer Steve Paine following through the hole. Johnson began eighth on the starting grid and waited for the field to spread out before cracking the top-five with 20 laps in the books. With the field jockeying for position in three-wide battles around the speedway, defending HoF Classic champion Tim Fuller ducked under Coffey on a lap 25 restart and Johnson mirrored the move the following circuit. The 'Doctor' shadowed Fuller for the next half-dozen circuits before again finding the needed traction low out of turn four, this time to forge the final lead change on lap 40. Tomkins cut into Johnson's once seemingly insurmountable advantage the second half of the race yet traffic kept him at bay when it counted most, with three car-lengths separating the front-runners as the checkered flag waved. Fuller, Coffey and Pat Ward followed in order with Paine, Jimmy Phelps, Billy Decker, Tom Sears Jr. and Dale Planck filling out the top-10. 2006 Feature Win Leaders: Heading into the mid-week show at Brewerton, 26 tracks have hosted DIRT-sanctioned big-block Modified races with 52 drivers scoring victories in the 156 features run. Defending Mr. DIRT Champion Tim Fuller tops the list with 14 triumphs followed by current SDS points leader Alan Johnson with 12 wins and recently crowned Lernerville and Tri-City points champion Kevin Bolland with 10. All-time Advance Auto Parts Series race winner Brett Hearn and defending Syracuse Eckerd 200 champion Billy Decker both have nine wins, past Mr. DIRT champions Gary Tomkins and Pat O'Brien have reached victory lane eight times while Western Pa./Ohio standout Rex King has taken seven checkered flags. Matt Sheppard owns six first-place trophies while Steve Paine, Pat Ward, Vic Coffey, Frankie Caprara and Brian Swartzlander own four wins apiece. Three-time winners are Danny Johnson, Kenny Tremont and Andy Bachetti as Dale Planck, Jimmy Horton, Justin Haers, Jimmy Johnson, Dave Murdick, Tom Winkle, Ric Hill, Jeremiah Shingledecker and Billy Dunn are the only other drivers to repeat. Tour regular Jimmy Phelps has reached victory lane once so far at Fulton (NY) Speedway, although the Team Troyer driver remains in search of his first-ever Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series win after setting fast time on three occasions last season. Super Series Stats: Since the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series debut in 1980, 43 tracks have staged 552 extra-distance events. Along with Hearn's DIRT-best 484 (323 big-block/161 small-block) Modified wins registered at more than 30 tracks throughout the Northeast, the 'Jet' has flown to the top on the all-time Advance Auto Parts (89) Super DIRT Series win chart, with a division-best 62 extra-distance triumphs coming in Mr. DIRT 358-Modified Series competition. Fifteen Advance Auto Parts SDS wins have been scored at Rolling Wheels (12), Cayuga County (2) and Brewerton (1).
