After two weeks of regular racing to start the Ohsweken Speedway season, the
first special event of the year is coming up this weekend. Trailers by Jim
Bray presents Friday Night Thunder featuring the Corr/Pak Merchandising
Sprint Cars, ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini-Stocks, and Fun Stocks, plus the
first of two scheduled appearances for the Mod-Lite Stars Championship North
tour this coming Friday night, May 30.
The Mod-Lites – sometimes also known as Dwarf Cars – are always exciting at
Ohsweken, which is one of the largest and fastest venues on their schedule.
This Friday marks the second stop on the 6 race schedule for the Mod Lite
Stars North Tour. #22 Mikey Hay took the season opening event for the
series on May 10 at the Merrittville Speedway. The Mod Lites will return to
Ohsweken on Friday night, August 22 to contest the North tour season finale.

After two exciting nights of Corr/Pak Sprint Car action, Jared Zimbardi of
Salamanca, New York has emerged as the early championship point leader.
“The Juice” stands 11 points ahead of Alton, Ontario driver Keith Dempster
heading into this Friday, while Fred Cade of Niagara Falls, Kevin Job of
Campbellville, and Glenn Styres of Ohsweken round out the top 5. Quebec
driver Alain Bergeron came to Ohsweken last Friday to compete against the
strong local drivers and left with the $1,500 winner’s cheque. More
invaders will be on hand to challenge the regular weekly teams throughout
the season, and there are sure to be a few surprises along the way.
On the strength of 2 consecutive feature wins to start the Ohsweken season,
Cody MacPherson of St. Catherines sits atop the ESSO Thunder Stock points
standings, 14 markers ahead of Vince Fargnoli of Niagara Falls. Defending
track champion Brad Bacher fought his way from the rear of the field last
Friday to come away with a top 5 finish, placing him just 2 points behind
Fargnoli, while Glen Leinen and Ryan Dinning round out the top 5. One of
the largest Thunder Stock fields in quite some time at Ohsweken competed
last Friday as a fine group of 18 cars took the green flag in the feature,
with rookie Jamie Cox one of the new entrants in his sharp looking red #044.
In the ever competitive ESSO Mini-Stock division, opening day feature winner
and defending track champion Abel Castelein leads round 2 feature winner
Mitchell Brown by a scant 4 points heading into Friday night. The win was
the first for Brown, who is just 15 years of age, while Kevin Hilborn, Mark
Thorne, and Kelly Hallett round out the top 5 behind him. Last week’s
feature turned into an entertaining 3-way battle between Hallett, Brown, and
Castelein for the lead, and more of the same is expected all season.
The new Fun Stock division added a new competitor last Friday in Lee Hils,
who came away with the victory in the first feature race for the division on
the infield track at Ohsweken. Karl Sault continues to lead the points,
however, but a growing field of competitors as the season continues will
surely make things interesting.
Affordable family entertainment just a short drive away from most
mid-western locations, Friday Night Thunder Adult General Admission is once
again $10, Seniors & students 13 – 17 are $8, with kids 12 and under FREE!
